At Orthotics NZ we take a holistic approach to our patients and their injuries or disabilities. We know that understanding each patient’s history and lifestyle will enable us to deliver the best results for the patient. We use a clinical reasoning process to understand how a patient moves their body, how fit they are, if and where movement might be restricted and whether or not asymmetry in gait or physical posture is present. This process paints a clearer picture of the issues the patient is facing, and may reveal things like a leg length difference, curvature in the spine or an affected ankle or knee joint, all things which can impact on physical function.

Next, we conduct an in-depth analysis of the injury or disability the patient is presenting with. This analysis leads to either an off-the-shelf brace or a support that can be modified, if required, to best meet the patient’s need. Alternatively, where required, we utilise the latest in scanning technology to scan the problem area, be it skull, leg or wrist, in order to custom manufacture a support or brace. Depending on the injury or disability, braces and supports may be employed to restrict movement, aid in pain relief, limit joint motion or promote stability.

Whilst sometimes an orthotic brace or support is all a client might require, generally it is provided as a component of a wider treatment plan developed in conjunction with the patient’s GP, Specialist or Therapist. By working in this collaborative manner we are able to provide best-practice Orthotic services to our patients, focusing on promoting function, choice and independence, with the overarching goal of a return to wellness.
